Professor Tony Cunningham AO FAHMS was appointed President of AAMRI in November 2016. He is Executive Director of the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and the Institute’s Centre for Virus Research.

Professor Cunningham is an infectious diseases physician, clinical virologist and scientist. He trained in infectious diseases, clinical virology and virology research at the University of Melbourne and as a postdoctoral fellow in infectious diseases at Stanford University. He is internationally renowned for his research on the immunobiology of HIV and herpesviruses, his work on vaccine development and trialing, and as an antivirals expert.

 Professor Cunningham is also Director of the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology Research (ACH2), a Commonwealth Government-funded institute that aims to combat the impact of HIV and hepatitis in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region by bringing together basic researchers with translational scientists and physicians. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2016.
