Professor Tony Cunningham AO was appointed President of AAMRI in November 2016. He is Executive Director of the Westmead Institute, and Professor of Research Medicine, Sydney Medical School and Sub-Dean (Research), Westmead Clinical School. Professor Cunningham is also Director of the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology Research (ACH2), a Commonwealth Government-funded institute that aims combat the impact of HIV and hepatitis in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region by bringing together basic researchers with translational scientists and physicians.
Professor Cunningham trained in infectious diseases, clinical virology and virology research at the University of Melbourne and as a postdoctoral fellow in infectious diseases at Stanford University. His major research interests are in HIV and Herpesviruses (particularly Herpes simplex virus and varicella virus) biology and immunology, especially in relation to the development of vaccines and microbicides. He has published more than 280 primary refereed scientific articles and >70 invited reviews or chapters in various journals or books on these topics and has been cited more than 11,000 times.
