The Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) is the peak body representing health and medical research organisations across Australia. Our mission is to achieve positive policy outcomes for our member organisations, and Australian health and medical research more broadly, through advocacy activities, the provision of authoritative advice and information, relationship building, and representing member organisations in areas of shared concern to government, industry, media and the public. The Position

An exciting opportunity is available for a Communications Manager to develop and implement communication and campaign plans to support key AAMRI activities. This dynamic role provides the opportunity to apply skills across a diverse array of communications activities.

Key responsibilities: –

  • Manage AAMRI’s communications across a range of channels, including social media, AAMRI’s website and AAMRI’s monthly e-newsletter
  • Maintain media relationships and identify strong news hooks to generate media coverage about medical research organisations and government policies affecting medical research
  • Develop clear, simple messaging for the production of news and communication documents, including media releases, opinion pieces, fact sheets and web pages
  • Monitor media coverage relating to AAMRI, medical research organisations and policies affecting medical research
  • Identify and develop opportunities that will enhance the profile, resonance and reach of AAMRI, and the profile of Australian medical research organisations
  • Undertake evaluation of AAMRI’s communications activities (online, media, social media and internal and external) to ensure communication objectives are being met
  • Maintain positive relationships with the communications staff of member organisations and other stakeholder organisations, and with relevant external agencies/suppliers
  • Oversee the design and production of publications and communication materials

The position will be based at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Parkville, Melbourne. The successful applicant will report to and work closely with the AAMRI’s Director of Policy and Operations (responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the organization and other activities, including; policy and government relations, submissions and reports, information collection and analysis, member services and representation, stakeholder engagement, corporate documents and operations, company secretary, and strategic advice and administration support to the President and Board).

Skills and Experience

The successful applicant will have tertiary qualifications with experience in communications, media and/or public relations, preferably within science, health or government sector. The role requires strong written communication skills, including writing for different audiences and experience of managing multi-agency projects. The successful applicant will have an ability to work independently and learn on the fly. They will be resourceful, proactive and outcome-focused, and will demonstrate attention to detail and diplomacy.
