Submission to the Inquiry into and report on all aspects of the conduct of the 2016 Federal Election and matters related thereto

A Parliamentary inquiry is underway into various matters relating to the 2016 Federal Election. As part of this inquiry a second interim report was released earlier this year. The report proposed a ban on donations from foreign citizens and entities to political parties, associated entities and third parties.

AAMRI’s submission stresses the importance of ensuring that any such ban does not see medical research institutes inadvertently classified as ‘third parties’ and therefore prevented from receiving philanthropic and other support from foreign citizens or other entities (such as from the Wellcome Trust, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the National Institute for Health). The proposed ban should also not prevent medical research institutes from making public comment in areas in line with their mission.
