AAMRI submission to the Draft 2016 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap

AAMRI submission to the Draft 2016 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap

16th January, 2017

Following a consultation in September 2016, a draft of the National Infrastructure Roadmap was released for comment in December 2016. AAMRI responded in support of the key recommendations highlighted in the draft Roadmap. This includes the nine focus areas that address current and future infrastructure needs, and the development of an investment plan that includes sustainable funding mechanisms for national research infrastructure facilities.

In its submission, AAMRI notes that complementary initiatives such as the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) and the Biomedical Translation Fund (BTF) should not be used as a vehicle to fund ongoing investment in national and landmark health and medical research infrastructure. Furthermore, the benefits of both these major funding initiatives could be greatly reduced without an increased level of investment in the research infrastructure required to support them.

AAMRI also supports the Roadmap’s recognition of the critical importance of a skilled workforce and access to overseas facilities for ongoing successful health and medical research outcomes in Australia.
