Submission to the Review of Significant Investor Visa and Premium Investor Visa Programmes

5th January, 2015

The Significant Investor Visa (SIV) is a visa category for people who are willing to invest at least A$5 million into complying investments in Australia and want to maintain business and investment activity in Australia.

The Australian Government recently announced a review to improve the SIV programme, including the introduction of a new Premium Investor Visa (PIV) offering a more expeditious, 12 month pathway to permanent residency than the SIV, for those meeting a $15 million threshold.

In AAMRI’s submission to the review, we recommend that the SIV and PIV programmes include philanthropic contributions to health and medical research (and potentially other research areas) within scope of complying investment vehicles. This would allow the programmes to tap into the strong philanthropic culture and large number of high-net-worth individuals overseas to increase investment in Australian health and medical research and augment the nation’s medical technologies and pharmaceuticals industry.
