Celebrating Medical Research and critical role clinician researchers play

In mid-August, AAMRI VIC hosted its annual Celebrating Medical Research event at Victorian Parliament House.

With over 100 medical research institute and government representatives in attendance, this year’s event focused on recognising the important role that clinician researchers play in supporting Victoria’s health services and the medical research sector.

MC’ed by AAMRI VIC President Professor Ricky Johnstone, the evening included researchers from Orygen introducing their team’s use of virtual reality to support young people to transition back into work and social situations following a serious mental health issue – thanks to Professor Lucia Valmaggia and James Reeves for sharing their team’s experiences, with VR headsets also available for attendees to try out during the event.

Special thanks also to Paul Hamer, Parliamentary Secretary for Jobs, who stepped in for Minister Danny Pearson, and Georgie Crozier MP, Shadow Minster for Health, for sharing their support and emphasising the critical role that health and medical research plays for Victoria.

Australia has a highly motivated clinical workforce that are eager to contribute to research, to directly benefit patients and to continuously improve health care services and delivery.

But we need to remove the barriers that are currently holding back our clinical workforce to ensure our clinician researchers can drive research that transforms frontline patient care and better supports our health service system.

During the AAMRI VIC Celebrating Medical Research event, we aired a video sharing the perspectives of six Victorian clinician researchers, talking about their commitment to driving research and the opportunities that exist to remove barriers they currently face – watch on below.
